Hidden or Hiding?

Life seasons hit differently when you arrive at a certain epiphany: what happens to you is ultimately your responsibility, regardless of its impact or whether the cause is external or internal.

Now in my late twenties, I have come to accept that life is a race run within your own lane, not to compare, nor to compete. It is a journey of faithfully stewarding the space God has entrusted to you. You will not always have everything figured out. You will not possess every answer or every missing puzzle piece. Yet you can still run your race with confidence, using what you have, where you are, anchored by a clear understanding of your deepest "why", the reason you continue moving forward with faith, audacity, and endurance regardless of the cost.

One of the humbling realities of life is that there are no shortcuts to growth. No matter how much we aspire, plan, and pursue our desires, preparation often demands sacrifices that remain unseen and unrecognized. Yet it is within this hidden work that character is formed. It is where we learn to endure being overlooked, underestimated, and confined by the limited perceptions of others.

There is something beautiful about seasons of obscurity. Like gold buried beneath layers of earth and diamonds formed deep beneath the ground, value is not diminished simply because it remains unseen. Gold must endure the fire, while diamonds are forged under pressure. Neither process is glamorous, yet both reveal something precious.

In the same way, God often does His deepest work in places where there is no applause, recognition, or validation. What remains unseen is not forgotten, it is being refined. The Master Craftsman understands the value of what is being formed and knows the appointed time to reveal it.

Until then, the work continues beneath the surface.

Hiddenness teaches us to steward our gifts without needing an audience. It teaches us to carry our light without forcing it to shine before its appointed time. We become more aware of what we bring to the table and how our gifts can serve others rather than merely elevate ourselves.

In a culture constantly chasing applause, influence, validation, and the approval of the crowd, a difficult question remains:

Do we take up our space simply to fulfill our mission and calling, anchored in who God created us to be, regardless of how people respond?

Being hidden requires a kind of humility that crushes the ego. There is no performance, no striving for recognition, and no need to prove yourself. There is only the quiet surrender of taking your place in the race and choosing to please God rather than people.

"In hiddenness, we learn to pursue God more deeply, rest more fully in His presence, and trust Him more completely. We learn dependence instead of self-sufficiency. We learn grace toward ourselves when progress feels slow and outcomes remain uncertain. More importantly, hiddenness molds the heart into one marked by patience, compassion, gentleness, meekness, and humility."

"It reminds us that everyone has a lane to run."

When it is someone else's season of harvest, hiddenness teaches us to rejoice with them. When others grieve, hiddenness teaches us to sit with them in their sorrow, even when words are insufficient. Hiddenness teaches us how to wait well.

How we respond in hidden seasons often prepares us for future seasons of responsibility, influence, and fruitfulness.

Yet there is another side to this conversation.

Not all obscurity is hiddenness.

There is a kind of hiding born from insecurity, fear, pride, and self-preservation. Hiding is often our attempt to escape realities we know we need to confront—the wounds we have not healed from, the fears we refuse to face, the lies we have believed, and the narratives we have constructed from our own biases and limited understanding.

“While hiddenness draws us closer to God, hiding often moves us away from Him.”

It persuades us to rely on our own strength, striving to earn a place in the race rather than receiving the place God has already given us.

More often than not, hiding disguises itself as productivity. It hides behind packed calendars, endless commitments, relentless ambition, and the constant pursuit of doing more. We become so consumed with activity that we rarely stop to ask whether our efforts align with the race we are called to run or whether they are merely distractions from what we are trying to avoid.

When we hide from what we fear confronting, we slowly replace being with doing.

These distractions do more than occupy our attention; they gradually shape our hearts. We begin hiding from the Light Giver while attempting to manufacture our own light.

Perhaps that is where the distinction lies:

Hiding is an act of our own will.

Being hidden is often an act of God's sovereign will.

One is rooted in fear, insecurity, pride, or self-preservation.

The other is often rooted in divine timing, preparation, and purpose.

This does not mean every hidden season is directly caused by God. Some seasons arise from disappointment, injustice, mistakes, or simply living in a broken world. Yet God remains able to redeem every season and use it for our formation.

No matter how hard we try to force visibility, God's timing ultimately prevails.

Jesus reminds us:

"Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
— Matthew 5:16 (NASB)

The goal is not to seek the spotlight.

Neither is it to avoid it.

The goal is faithfulness.

It is consistency, commitment, and devotion to who we are becoming in Christ. It is trusting that whether we are seen or unseen, celebrated or overlooked, God remains at work.

"Because when God chooses to reveal what He has been cultivating in silence, the light will not point back to us, it will point back to Him."

So the question remains:

Is God inviting you into a season of hiddenness, or are you using hiding as an excuse to avoid obedience?

Sealing this with love,
